There seems to be much debate and differences of opinion as to the timing of the release of the 1^st Chesterfield, although all agree that it occurred between the 18^th and 19^th century. Apparently the first Chesterfield was commissioned by the 4^th Earl of Chesterfield and was one of the first pieces of furniture to be put into mass production (although not as mass production as we know it today). This was to allow gentlemen to sit with a straight back so as not sit with “odd motions, strange postures and ungentlemanly carriage”.

The ORIGINAL Chesterfield was plain, without diamond buttoning or cushions. Frames were of course made from solid hardwoods and each piece was individually HANDCRAFTED.
